Welcome to Metis Awareness Month! We are very excited to share with you the offerings for the 2021 Metis Awareness Month in SD8 Kootenay Lake! We are incredible grateful to the local West Kootenay Metis Association who has helped us put together an amazing line up of knowledge keepers for us this month (and beyond!). Please find the below offerings and join in on as many of them as you are able. These offerings are open to everyone (some specify certain grade ranges) and can be shared with community and families. To start us off in a good way, Don Courson (President) and Christopher Yates of the West Kootenay Metis Association shared some beautiful words to the students in this short video

Metis Culture and Teachings with Roy Pogorzelski

Friday November 5th 1:30-2:15pm PST

Please join us for a session on Metis Culture and Teachings with Roy Pogorzelski. This session is aimed at students in grades 10-12 and will be fun and engaging!

JigFit with Madelaine McCallum

Mondays November 8th, 15th, 22nd, and 29th from 11:30-12:15pm PST

Please join Madelaine McCallum for JigFit. This will be a highly interactive and active workout with traditional teachings. Get ready to get moving! Suitable for all grades.

Culture Camp: Metis Music with JJ Guy!

Tuesday November 10th from 12:45-1:30pm PST

Join us for some delightful Metis fiddle music and teachings with JJ Guy! Be ready to get toe tapping to that beautiful and cheerful Metis music. Suitable for all grades.

Michif Language with Amy Cross and Marie Schoenthal – November 17th

Wednesday November 17th from 10-11:00am PST

Come learn Michif language! Suitable for all grades.

Book Club – The Break

Tuesday November 30th from 3:15-4:00pm PST

We will be reading The Break by Katherena Vermette. Please contact me ( asap if you are interested in participating. This book has been assessed by Focused Education Resources and is suited for the grade 10-12 level.

The book club itself will take place on Tuesday November 30th from 3:15-4:00pm over zoom. Link will be sent to those who register.

Conversations with Maria Campbell

Friday December 10th from 1:30-2:15pm PST

We are extremely excited to offer this opportunity to have a conversation with the incredible Maria Campbell! Maria will be sharing teachings and stories of her journey. She is one of Canada’s greatest writers. This session would be suitable to all staff and high school students. Not to be missed!
