Orange Shirt Day Design Contest Winner

By Jesse Halton, District Indigenization Coordinator

The Aboriginal Education Department held a tshirt Design Contest for Orange Shirt Day 2020.

The designs had to include the Orange Shirt Day phrase "Every Child Matters", our school district  Ab Ed feather logo, local place-based images and be an original design.

Over 50 students submitted amazing and original designs from schools across the district.

The Aboriginal Committee for Education was enthusiastic and inspired by all the designs that were submitted. The quality, the colour, the imagination, the creativity! Students in SD8 shone brightly. The ACE chose a winning design on February 11 2020.

Freya Emery from Mount Sentinel Secondary School won the contest. Her design will be featured on 200 shirts for Orange Shirt Day in September. What an incredible recognition of SD8's committment to honouring Residential School Survivors and remembering those who did not.
