Welcome to Kindergarten!

We want to make sure you know about all opportunities available for your family.

What is Aboriginal Education?

Does your child have Aboriginal (First Nations- status and non-status, Métis, or Inuit) heritage? If so, we offer some additional opportunities through our Aboriginal Education program for all self-identified students.

Examples of programs, services, and activities available to students:

  • One-on-one support: academic and cultural
  • Connection to Elders and Knowledge Keepers
  • Field trips, scholarship support, graduation and future-planning
  • SD8 Youth Pow Wow
  • Leadership opportunities
  • Reconnection to culture
  • Traditional craftwork and storytelling

Students have the opportunity to be involved in all schools, and these supports vary at each school depending on student needs. The goal is improved educational outcomes for all, and ensuring that students feel a sense of belonging and connection at schools.

An information letter will be sent home in September for students who have self-identified as Aboriginal on the school registration form, and parents/guardians will have the opportunity to provide input on the types of school-based supports that would be of benefit to their child.
