Aboriginal Education in SD8 Kootenay Lake!

We are happy you are here and look forward to getting to know your family!

Whether your child is just starting kindergarten or joining us from another school or district, we want to make sure you know about all opportunities available for your family.

What is Aboriginal Education?

Does your child/family have Aboriginal (First Nations —status and non-status, Metis, or Inuit) heritage? If so, we offer some additional opportunities through our Aboriginal Education programs.

We welcome and support all self-identified Aboriginal students who enroll in ABED supplemental programming by September 30th of each school year.

Examples of programs, services, and activities available to students:

  • One-on-one support: Academic and cultural
  • Connection to Elders and role models
  • Field trips, Scholarship Support, Grad & future planning
  • Youth pow wow
  • Access to tutoring
  • Leadership and confidence building opportunities
  • Reconnection to culture for families
  • Traditional craftwork & Storytelling

Each fall, students have the opportunity to sign up for and be involved and supported through Aboriginal supports in all schools.  These supports vary at each school depending on student needs and staffing expertise.  We do our very best to individualize supports for all students, supporting Aboriginal students on pathways to graduation!
