Check Out the Awesome: Brent Kennedy

Aboriginal Education continues to be seamlessly integrated into every class at Brent Kennedy this year. In almost all of the classes, we have been using a curriculum that was developed by the Alberta SPCA that teaches young people all about the 7 Sacred Teachings of the Aanishinaabe First Nation. Students learn information about each of the animals that are represented, as well as learn more about each of the 7 values through interactive activities.

Respect - Bison

Love - Eagle

Honesty - Sabe

Courage - Bear

Humility - Wolf

Truth - Turtle

Wisdom - Beaver

In other news, we just had our Winter Feast, which was a huge success! We made fry bread and chili for all the classes and even had some leftovers to send home with families. All of the staff and students were so encouraging and grateful for the event. The vibes were high and the smell of chili and frybread permeated the whole school. We are already looking forward to frybread and jam after the break.

In February, we hosted special guest Virginia, from Cowessess First Nation in Saskatchewan. She gave a hoop dancing presentation to the whole school, educating staff and students about the cultural art form.

We look forward to Spring and getting outside onto the land for cultural activities such as Indigenous games, drumming and plant identification.
