Check out the Awesome: Homelinks Creston
In our small but mighty school in the heart of Creston, classrooms have been buzzing with interactive learning opportunities. From storytelling to games, Fridays have taken on an interactive Indigenous theme that has truly captured the attention and curiosity of learners (and some parents) throughout the building.
Our Kindergarten/Grade One students have learned to count to ten in Ktunaxa using their Ktunaxa Colouring Book, building an early connection to local Indigenous language through hands-on learning. Students in Grades Two to Six have been busy creating their very own Ktunaxa Language Books. These books are being created to feature different themes, the first being numbers. In the coming week, students will add animal names and illustrations to their book. To close this activity, students will sew a felt animal and create a name plate to display in the classroom.
Meanwhile, our Grade 7–9 students have been diligently working on their moccasins, a project that began before the break. I have been very impressed with both their focus and craftsmanship. Students created their individual foot pattern, traced and cut them from leather, and then sewed it together. This week, they are putting the finishing touches on their moccasins by adding personalized cuffs and ties, bringing their hard work to completion.
Homelinks Creston is an amazing learning community, and I am grateful to work with a teaching team that welcomes my ideas and Indigenous learning activities into their classrooms.
