In JVH Elementary Aboriginal Education, since Christmas we have been working on learning about the Inuit and the 13 Grandmother moons. Each class created a different interpretation of the Wolf Moon. We are also learning about the Inuit.  The Primary students through stories and discussion created Inukshuks and igloos. In the Intermediate, we learned about life in the far north, created Inukshuk pictures and did some soap carvings. The students went through the Inuit year with types of food eaten and hunted during each season. After Spring Break we will looking to research and report on some Indigenous issues, make some artifacts and some Indigenous food in preparation for an Indigenous Celebration in downtown Kaslo.

In English 12, students have been participating in Indigenous Literature Circles, with guest visits from Danica Weager and Jesse Halton to help enrich our learning with Indigenous perspectives. 4 different books have been chosen with varying themes - Indian Horse, the Marrow Thieves, Motorcycles & Sweetgrass, and Son of a Trickster. So far, our class has discussed how humour, place, and circular storytelling techniques are used in Indigenous literatures, and how diverse perspectives enrich our learning.
