Ktunaxa Calendar

kiʔsuʔk kyukyit! As the seasons change, it is very fitting that we celebrate October as Ktunaxa language month. kupaqpiʔk is the Ktunaxa word for October and it translates to “falling leaves”. I always love learning about the meaning behind Ktunaxa words. The Ktunaxa people did not have a calendar in the same sense we do. They use plants, animals, and signs from nature that the seasons are changing and it shows the connection to the land and how important it is to see patterns over many years. Language and culture are very connected, so teaching Ktunaxa language in classes is a great way to help make the connection for students.

Teaching all students Ktunaxa is a good step towards reconciliation and helps Ktunaxa students in our district feel represented. Learning new languages can push us outside our comfort zone, especially when there are new sounds to learn to pronounce. This is a great reminder for adults that it is okay to feel uncomfortable when learning something new!
