Orange Shirt Day and National Day for Truth & Reconciliation

Aboriginal Education in School District 8, Kootenay Lake, is honoured to continue growing awareness for survivors of the Indian Residential School system in Canada, and those who did not return. This year, we recognise Orange Shirt Day at all schools and programs in our District and will provide information and resources for the National Day for Truth & Reconciliation.

In the attached pdf is the explanation of the #sd8abed Orange Shirt Day design. This was from a contest that was held in our district just before the pandemic started. We are honoured to see this design in print on beautiful orange shirts. It honours the story of Anne Jimmie, from Lower Kootenay Band, who went to Residential School and shared her story with the students who designed the shirt. The shirt is seen here worn by Liv Hilde, Aboriginal Academic Success Teacher at LVR and Blewett.
